01/27/21 Who is the Lord?

READING: Exodus 4-6, Matthew 16:21-17:21

The God of Israel said to Pharaoh through Moses and Aaron, “Let my people go” (Exo 5:1). Pharaoh, however, was obstinate and rebellious. He had no intention of releasing the Hebrew people. In fact, he blatantly asked, “Who is the Lord that I should obey him by letting Israel go?” (Exo 5:2). Pharaoh may well have not recognized this God, but his question likely implies he saw no reason to obey Him either way.

Just who was the Lord, then?

He was the Creator of the world and the warrior for His people. He communicated with them, led them, corrected them, and loved them. He was more mighty than the Egyptian gods, more powerful than Pharaoh, and more miracle-working than the Egyptian magicians. No one could stop Him, and He would indeed lead His people out of Egypt. The Egyptian armies would eventually drown at His hand in the midst of the Red Sea. That’s who the Lord was—and He was worthy of Pharaoh’s worship and obedience.

How about you (and me)? What does your life say about what you really believe about who God is?

PRAYER: “God, remind me today who You are. You are the great I AM.”
