READING: Leviticus 9-11, Matthew 27:1-31
The story of Nadab and Abihu is short (just three verses in Leviticus 10), but it’s dramatic. They presented “unauthorized fire” before the Lord, and that choice cost them their lives. A fire sent from the Lord consumed them. Scholars debate exactly what Nadab and Abihu did that brought judgment. Maybe they offered their offering at the wrong time, did it with the wrong coals, made their offering arrogantly, did it in a drunken state—or any combination of these or other causes. What we do know is that they went against what God commanded.
Why such drastic judgment? In the previous chapters of this book, God had clearly told Aaron and his sons what they must do. Still, they made their own plans and did what He had not commanded them to do. Early in the work of the priesthood, they had already turned to rebellion—and God took a dramatic step to show them (and all the people) their wrong. Through their judgment, God was saying to His people, “I remind you I’m holy, and I will not tolerate rebellion and sin.” Should He have overlooked their rebellion, the people would have missed just how serious God is about His holiness.
We, too, are wise to remember that He is still holy.
PRAYER: “God, teach me just how holy You are.”
