03/03/21 Have Courage

READING: Numbers 7, Mark 6:30-7:13

The disciples once again faced the reality of a storm on the sea. In this case, Jesus came walking to them on the water. They, though, thought He was a ghost, and they were terrified. The combination of the storm and the figure on the sea was too much for them.

As Jesus often did, He met them where they were. He recognized their fear and said to them, “Have courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid” (Mark 6:50). The first and last phrases of this statement are somewhat repetitive, thus emphasizing the point. Despite their circumstances, Jesus did not want fear to capture His followers. He would ultimately calm their anxious hearts when He joined them in the boat.

It’s the phrase in the middle of what Jesus said that told them why they shouldn’t be afraid: “It is I.”  “I” was the Son of God. The Master over nature, demons, sickness, and death. As long as He was with them, they had no reason to fear. It is He who is with us, too.

PRAYER: “Lord, remind me that You’re with me if I fear today.”

DAILY ACTION STEP:  Hear the Lord say, “It is I” if life frightens you today.

TOMORROW’S READING: Numbers 8-10, Mark 7:14-37
