READING: Numbers 34-36, Mark 14:22-50
I wonder how many times over the years I’ve spoken in a similar manner as Jesus’ disciples in today’s New Testament reading. On one hand, they—likely following Peter’s lead—all said they would go to prison and death for Jesus. Never would they deny Him, even if loyalty cost them their lives. And, I’m convinced they meant what they said in that moment.
On the other hand, they all fled when Jesus was arrested. Every one of them deserted Jesus when the pressure was on. They did exactly what they said they wouldn’t do—seemingly, within hours of their original declaration of support.
I shudder to think how often I’ve made a commitment to Jesus in a moment of spiritual fervor, but didn’t keep my word when the pressure was on. Sometimes, our level of commitment to Christ is seriously challenged when the cost of following Him increases; trust on the mountaintop of blessing is much easier than trust in the valley of opposition and persecution. And, it is in our fleeing our commitments that we learn just where we stand—or don’t— spiritually.
I may be wrong, but I suspect we believers in North America may well face increasing opposition to the Christian faith in the years to come. If so, I pray our commitment will be real and enduring.
PRAYER: “God, I commit to keeping my word to You this day—no matter what I face.”
DAILY ACTION STEP: Pray again today for believers around the world whose faith costs them much.
