03/30/21 Commitment

READING: Deuteronomy 24-27, Luke 3

As a fairly young believer, I quickly learned that some people regularly “recommitted” themselves to the Lord after they had fallen into sin. And, to be honest, I followed suit because that’s what I thought was the right step to take. It was indeed the right move for me in some cases, but in other cases it was simply to assuage my guilt. In any case, renewal and recommitment were always about fixing a problem from yesterday, not always about fixing my sights on faithfulness tomorrow.

As Moses prepared God’s people for entering the land, he called them to have a striking observance when the people would ratify their covenant with God again. Such an event was not uncommon in the ancient world, and they typically addressed both blessings for obedience and curses for disobedience. The people were to state clearly their commitment to follow the Lord and keep His statutes and commands. They were already God’s people, but they would renew their covenant relationship with God at His command at pivotal moments in their journey.

Today, I renew my commitment to God not simply because I’m a sinful person, but because He’s a covenant-keeping, faithful God. I want to follow Him with all my heart and soul.

PRAYER: “God, I reaffirm my commitment to You today.”

DAILY ACTION STEP:  Regardless of the condition of your spiritual walk, take time to recommit yourself to God today.

TOMORROW’S READING:  Deuteronomy 28-29, Luke 4:1-30
