READING: 2 Samuel 15-17, Luke 24:13-53
Their heart burned within them as they listened to Jesus (whom they had not yet recognized) open the Word to them. He taught them, speaking of Himself as evidenced in Moses and the Prophets. They had been discouraged over the recent events in Jerusalem, but something happened within them as Jesus taught them. It was, as one writer described it, “like a message being sown into the soul.”*
Do you remember when the Word of God first became life-giving for you—when your heart burned within you as you heard it? I was 13 when that first happened. The gospel was new to me, fresh, alive, and transforming. My heart leapt each time I learned more of it, and I couldn’t wait to hear more. I may not always be as passionate and zealous these days, but it’s fun to know the Word still grabs my heart.
Today, I’m praying for a relative and a friend who are not believers – two people I love whose hearts I want God to open. May it be that their hearts burn within them the next time they hear the Word!
PRAYER: “God, please speak through Your Word to others we love.”
DAILY ACTION STEP: If your heart doesn’t burn when you hear the Word, ask the Lord to make you more ready to hear Him.
TOMORROW’S READING: 2 Samuel 18-19, John 1:1-28
