READING: 2 Samuel 20-22, John 1:29-51
I read today David’s praise of God for graciously delivering him from Saul and his enemies, and both the words that describe God and the verbs that tell what He did are powerful. God was, for example, David’s rock, fortress, deliverer, shield, refuge, and Savior. He saved David from his enemies, heard his cries, pulled him from deep waters, rescued him, and gave him strength for battle.
More specifically, I’m captured by David’s understanding that this God—the Lord Most High who thunders from the heavens—was his God. Read these texts, watch for the words “me” and “my,” and be amazed and humbled:
- “The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer, my God, my rock where I seek refuge. My shield, the horn of my salvation, my stronghold, my refuge, and my Savior, you save me from violence.” (2 Sam 22:2-3)
- “From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry for help reached his ears.” (2 Sam 22:7)
- “He frees me from my enemies. You exalt me above my adversaries; you rescue me from violent men.” (2 Sam 22:49)
Multiple other verses carry that same theme—that David’s God is a relational God who knows His followers intimately and responds to them personally. And, He’s the same God we’re privileged to follow today.
PRAYER: “I praise You, Lord, that You allow me to be Your child.”
DAILY ACTION STEP: Throughout the day, turn to God. He cares for you. Personally. If you’re a believer, He is your God.
