05/19/21 Friend of the Groom

READING: 1 Kings 1-2, John 3

It’s another picture of the humility of John the Baptist. Despite his apparent popularity among the people, he was not the bridegroom; that is, he was not the One who had come to claim His bride. He was only the friend of the groom—but that role meant he attended the groom and shared in the joy when the bridegroom and the bride were united. Thus, when John could have been jealous because others were turning from him to Jesus, he did not go in that direction. Jesus’ coming on the scene meant John had accomplished his calling: he had paved the way for the coming Messiah.

My prayer today is that (1) I will be glad every time I hear the groom’s voice through His Word, (2) I will always direct others to Christ, and (3) I will continually rejoice at my privilege to do so as His child. He alone is the One sent from heaven.

PRAYER: “God, hear my three prayers above today.”

DAILY ACTION STEP:  Always point to Jesus today.

TOMORROW’S READING:  1 Kings 3-5, John 4:1-45
