READING: 1 Kings 18-20, John 7:1-24

One prophet of God versus 850 combined prophets of Baal and Asherah – the numbers are daunting. In our mind, the one prophet would have little, if any, chance of winning this battle. It just doesn’t make sense that one prophet would defeat more than 800.

But . . . it wasn’t prophet vs. prophet in this conflict. It was instead true God vs. false gods. And, just the modifiers “true” and “false” help us to understand how Elijah would fare in this conflict. It doesn’t make sense that false gods would somehow defeat the one and only true, living God. Indeed, large jars of water poured on the sacrifice were no hindrance for Elijah’s God to consume the sacrifice. It’s no wonder the people then cried out, ““The Lord—he is God! The Lord—he is God!” (1 Kgs 19:39).

There simply is no match for our God. He is he Lord! If you believe these statements are true, you need not worry about anything today.

PRAYER: “God, I need help recognizing my false gods.”

DAILY ACTION STEP:  Believe today that God is greater than all – and act on that belief.
