06/02/21 Multiplying the Loaves

READING: 2 Kings 4-6, John 8:31-59

Today’s Old Testament reading resounds with miracles. Elisha multiplied the widow’s oil. He announced that the Shunammite woman would have a child after her barren years. That child died, but Elisha was instrumental in raising him from the dead. The prophet miraculously “cured” the poisonous stew by putting flour in it. At Elisha’s command, Naaman the Syrian leper was healed by dipping in the Jordan River.

It’s the multiplying of the loaves that most catches my attention today, however. The number of people ready to eat was greater than the food available, but that issue was no problem for God. In God’s hand, 20 loaves of bread become enough to feed 100 people. They even had some left over when the meal was over.

Of course, this miracle foreshadows the miracles of Jesus’ feeding the thousands in the Gospels – and reminds us that all the Bible points to the Redeemer. Jesus Christ is the story of the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation. He must be likewise the center of our story.

PRAYER: “Father, thank You for Jesus and for His daily provision for us.”

DAILY ACTION STEP:  If you find yourself in short supply of something today, including things like hope and joy, trust God to provide for you.

TOMORROW’S READING: 2 Kings 7-9, John 9
