READING: 2 Kings 10-12, John 10:1-21
I’m always blessed when I read about the power of God—and about the powerlessness of every other “god” in comparison. Today’s text is no exception to this rule.
When Jehu defeated the followers of Baal, he also led his forces to destroy the temple of Baal. The text, though, says much more than that: they not only destroyed the temple, but they also turned it into a latrine! Though scholars debate the usage of “latrine” here, the biblical text certainly shows a desecration of Baal’s temple and a thorough defeat of his followers. From being a place of worship to being a toilet is a long way to fall—and Baal had no power to stop it!
This story leads me to think about several things:
- Am I praying for peoples around the world who are worshiping their own false gods—gods who cannot help them?
- What have I built (or, in fact, might be building even now) that simply won’t last?
- Am I intentionally tearing down idols from my heart? If not, why not?
- Knowing Christ has already defeated the enemy, do I live with faith and assurance?
PRAYER: “God, thank You for all the victories You grant us. Remind me continually to tear down my false gods today.”
DAILY ACTION STEP: Consider the same questions I’ve raised above.
