READING: 2 Chronicles 19-22, Acts 6:1-7:15
It’s one of my favorite Old Testament passages. In fact, it’s one of my favorite verses in all the Bible.
I’ve turned to it many times.
Like when I’m facing something I don’t know how to handle.
Or when I struggle with making a decision.
Or when it seems like the devil’s winning despite the efforts of God’s people to make a difference.
Or when I’m just confused. Or whenever I just need God’s help.
The text is the end of Jehoshaphat’s prayer in 2 Chronicles 12. Three enemy armies had rallied against God’s people, and the king rightly called them to fasting and prayer. As he prayed in the midst of this dangerous and overwhelming situation, he prayed these words: “For we are powerless before this vast number that comes to fight against us. We do not know what to do, but we look to you” (2 Chron 20:12).
The latter words are the ones that capture my attention. More literally, the phrase in the original language is “on you are our eyes”—and it illustrates a wise faith in a moment of fear and turmoil. No matter what we face, the right move is to take our eyes off our circumstance and turn them to God. Thus, we do know what to do in these times.
PRAYER: “God, whatever I must deal with today, I put my eyes on You.”
DAILY ACTION STEP: Do what the text says: look to God all day long.
