08/09/21 Sweet Rest

READING: Psalms 1-5, Acts 27:13-44

I love Psalm 4:8 – “I will both lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, Lord, make me live in safety.” I love these words because I have a tendency to lie awake at night, consumed at times by thoughts and worries that hardly reflect peace. I know better, but still I struggle just leaving things in the hands of God.

Verses like this one are incredibly helpful to me, however. The psalmist was facing some stressful situation, some angst-filled circumstances. What he recognized, though, is that his peace was not dependent on positive external circumstances. No matter what he faced, he could sleep in the night because the Lord was with him.

Here’s how I use verses like this one. At the suggestion of a good friend and mentor, I’ve kept the Word at my side for when I cannot sleep in the night. Simply writing the verses on a card and reading them when I can’t sleep are usually enough to give me rest.

God is good. In Him we find our peace and safety.

PRAYER: “God, I praise You for peace and safety I cannot create in myself.”

DAILY ACTION STEP:  If you struggle with burdens at night, keep this verse by your side tonight.

TOMORROW’S READING: Psalms 6-10, Acts 28
