08/11/21 Call upon the Lord

READING: Psalms 11-18, Romans 1

“The Lord lives—blessed be my rock! The God of my salvation is exalted” (Psa 18:46).

I read these words, and I immediately think about this praise song: “I Will Call upon the Lord.” Even in the midst of difficult times when he seemingly faced death, the psalmist turned to the Lord: “I called to the Lord in my distress, and I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry to him reached his ears” (Psa 18:6). It’s all amazing, actually: God heard his voice; His ears were attentive to the cry of His child when he sought help. God listened, and God responded.

The Lord was the psalmist’s fortress, his deliverer, his rescuer, his refuge. He is faithful, blameless, perfect—the one “worthy of praise” (Psa 46:3). All the psalmist could do was sing God’s praises, and that should be our response, too.

PRAYER: “God, let me call on You and sing Your praises this day.”

DAILY ACTION STEP:  Listen to the praise song in this devotion, and sing it again and again today.

TOMORROW’S READING: Psalms 19-22, Romans 2:1-3:8
