Even if you are not generally a note writer (or an e-mailer), I encourage you to take time anyway to send your pastor a quick note or email—especially as many of us are growing weary as COVID cases rise again. It won’t take you long, and it can make a big difference.
- A simple “thank you” for being your pastor. A card “for no reason at all” carries a lot of weight. I received one two weeks ago, and it made my day.
- A note of gratitude for faithful service during COVID. Frankly, many of us are just tired of trying to lead when everything seems to change overnight. Encouragement is always in order.
- A written prayer of support and love. Just write out the prayer and send it. It’s hard for me to explain how much the prayers of God’s people mean to us.
- A “family” card thanking your pastor’s entire family for being who they are. And, if you want to include a gift card to a restaurant, I suspect they’ll welcome it.
- A written testimony of one way your pastor’s ministry has strengthened you. Be specific. Give some details. Help your pastor see your joy and gratitude.
- An important prayer request. When you share a need with your pastor, you honor him as your spiritual leader.
- An affirmation of your pastor’s preaching. No matter how long I’ve been preaching, it’s still nice to know if my proclamation is connecting with my flock.
- An offer of some kind of helping hand for his family. Cut the grass. Detail the cars. Watch kids for a date night. Provide a meal. Do something!
- A testimony of your sharing the gospel with a family member or friend. I promise you that your Great Commission-obedience will encourage your pastor.
- A birthday or anniversary greeting. Your pastor may be surprised you know the dates – and he’ll be even more surprised by the note. If it’s his anniversary, be sure to send the note to his wife and to him.
What else comes to mind for you?
