READING: Proverbs 4-6, 2 Corinthians 2:5-3:18
Again today, the writer of Proverbs is clear that we are to listen to wisdom and avoid the way of the wicked. Indeed, the repetitive phrases of Proverbs 4 make that clear. On one hand, we are to “Hold on to instruction; don’t let go. Guard it, for it is your life” (Prov 4:13). Guarding our heart and considering our path every day are important steps for those who want to walk wisely.
On the other hand, the mandate to avoid evil is perhaps even more clear: “Keep off the path of the wicked;don’t proceed on the way of evil ones. Avoid it; don’t travel on it. Turn away from it, and pass it by” (Prov 4:14-15). The force of repetition is again undeniable, as six phrases in English drive the point home. If we didn’t hear it the first time – or if our heart simple didn’t want to listen at first—the writer makes it almost impossible for us to miss it.
Apparently, our hearts are so easily deceived that we need these kinds of repetitive reminders.
PRAYER: “God, help me to listen to Your commands the first time.”
DAILY ACTION STEP: If you need to hear these warnings again today, pay attention.
