READING: Proverbs 14-16, 2 Corinthians 8
I have my dad’s temper. The Lord saved him at age 71, and he has been with the Lord for nine years now—but I still remember his rage, no matter how old I get. And, I recognize I could react with just as much haste, just as much ferocity, and just as much venom as he did if I were to allow myself to do that. It’s the power of the Word and the Spirit, though, that keeps me from responding that way.
Hear the words of the writer of Proverbs today:
- “A quick-tempered person acts foolishly, and one who schemes is hated.” (Prov 14:17)
- “A hot-tempered person stirs up conflict, but one slow to anger calms strife.” (Prov 15:18)
Anger has a way of gripping our own soul in bondage even as it wounds the hearts of others. It consumes us, lurking in our heart ready to erupt at any moment. The joy of my heart today is that the Lord can redeem those emotions and turn them into patience and love.
PRAYER: “Father, may all my emotions glorify You today.”
DAILY ACTION STEP: In the power of the Spirit, control your temper today.
