READING: Ezekiel 33-35, 1 Peter 4:12-5:14
Today would have been my dad’s 83rd birthday if had lived that long. He went to be with the Lord nine years ago. But, he had become a believer a few years prior (at age 71)—and he became increasingly proud that I was a preacher, pastor/elder, and professor. It is that second role that I think about today.
Peter told the elders to willingly “shepherd the flock of God” (1 Pet 5:2) not for filthy gain, not lording over the people, but setting an example for the flock. One writer has noted that shepherds are to know the sheep, feed the sheep, lead the sheep, and protect the sheep.* This role carries great responsibility, but it also brings great joy. In fact, I know no person other than a pastor who has access to believers’ lives from birth to death and every significant event in between. And, if we serve the Lord well in this role, Jesus the Chief Shepherd will reward us accordingly.
This is all quite a privilege, actually. I am grateful to have been a shepherd (and even now, to be finishing a 16-month stint serving as Interim Pastor at a local church). I pray God has been pleased.
PRAYER: “Father, make me a shepherd who brings glory to You.”
DAILY ACTION STEP: Write a note of thanksgiving to a local pastor. If you are a pastor, send encouragement to another pastor in the area.
