“Humility is an essential quality for every believer and can be found only in those who have put on Christ and put off their old nature with all of its corruption. But it is especially necessary in pastors if we are to lead our congregations toward maturity in Christ. By humbling himself, Christ became ‘obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross,’ and would not allow personal concerns to cloud his calling to do the Father’s will (Phil. 2:8). In the same Philippians passage, Paul also addresses the essential nature of personal humility: ‘Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind let each of you regard one another as more important than himself; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others’ (2:3-4). I cannot help but believe that if pastors emblazoned blazoned those verses in their mind’s eye to be reviewed and practiced daily, the state of our churches would be significantly different.”
