READING: Hosea 6-14, Revelation 4-5
No matter how many times I read Revelation 5, I am convicted beyond words at John’s response to an unopened scroll. John saw the scroll in the hands of one seated on the throne, but no one was able to open it—at least not at first. Scholars differ on what the contents of the scroll might have been, but the text is clear about how John responded: he “wept and wept” (Rev 5:4)—words that indicate a loud, ongoing wailing. Apparently, he longed to hear more about the consummation, to know that God’s plan would be accomplished without further delay.
The Lion of the tribe of Judah, the conqueror, did of course have authority to open the scroll. He alone was worthy. By His death, He had purchased His people from all nations, tribes, and tongues—and all the elders could do was bow before Him and worship.
What I wonder about, though, is whether I would weep if my Bible were sealed shut. Would I grieve with great anguish if I could never again read the Word of God?
PRAYER: “Lord, help me never to take for granted the access I have to Your Word.”
DAILY ACTION STEP: As you study the Scriptures today, thank God for revealing His plan to us through His Word.
