READING: Amos 6-9, Obadiah; Revelation 10-11
“Woe to those who are at ease in Zion and to those who feel secure on the hill of Samaria . . .” (Amos 6:1). These words are penetrating to me today.
The people of Jerusalem (Zion) and Samaria were “at ease” with themselves, confident in their blessings, complacent in their rebellion, and secure in their own superiority and power. Other kingdoms seemingly stronger than they had already collapsed, but those stories had little effect on the Hebrews. They found their security in their wealth rather than in their Creator. Yet, they who thought they were first would also be the first to go into captivity under God’s judgment.
Why are these words penetrating to me? Because I realize how much I rest on my experiences, my training, my position, my dollars. It’s easy to feel comfortable because we have more than we’ve ever had, and life is good. My fear is that I would somehow forget the One who has given us good gifts in the first place; I fear I might make idols of the blessings God has given me. I don’t want to be another complacent leader who produces complacent followers, too.
PRAYER: “Father, teach me to lean on You. Forgive my being ‘at ease in Zion’ sometimes.”
DAILY ACTION STEP: Evaluate your own level of complacency before the Lord.
