12/28/21 Singing over Us

READING: Zephaniah 1-3; Haggai 1-2; Revelation 17-18

In what do you take delight? In what do take delight? To be honest, I have not much considered that question—but I probably should have. My answer to this question will tell me something about what motivates me . . . what brings me some sense of joy . . . and, in some cases, what my gods are, particularly when I’m clinging to idols. I don’t always take “delight” like I should.

But, today’s Old Testament reading reminds me of another truth about “delight” that is much more important: when God redeems His people and restores all things, He will delight over them. The warrior-king who has provided salvation for His people celebrates over them: “He will rejoice over you with gladness. He will be quiet in his love. He will delight in you with singing” (Zeph 3:17).

Here’s the way I described this truth in a devotion I wrote years ago: “Think about it. We will rejoice over God, but He will also rejoice over us. God will join in the singing as His glory is so evidenced in His incredible love for us. That’s unbelievable. But that’s the Lord’s declaration.”

This truth was amazing to me then, and it’s even more amazing to me now.

PRAYER: “God, it’s almost impossible for me to believe that You sing over us. You are amazing, Lord.”

DAILY ACTION STEP: Meditate all day on this image of God’s rejoicing over you.

TOMORROW’S READING: Zechariah 1-6, Revelation 19
