READING: Genesis 1:1-3:24
This year in my Bible study, I want to give much attention to who God is and, in contrast, who we are. I want to see God more this coming year—and the result will be that I can’t help but see myself and all my sinfulness in the process. That’s okay, though, because I know God has forgiven me and made me His child. Because of who He is, I want to read His Word again this year.
Today’s reading is a story we likely have heard many times. What captures my attention today, though, is the God who speaks – and who, when He speaks, always sees His word fulfilled. He is not a false god on a shelf, a figurine who can neither speak nor hear. No, this God is the one and only true God, the one who reigns over all.
This God said, “Let there be light”—and necessarily, there was light. In fact, look at how the New Living Translation expresses this truth in another creative act of God: “Then God said, ‘Let there be a space between the waters, to separate the waters of the heavens from the waters of the earth.’ And that is what happened” (Gen 1:6-7, emphasis mine). Creation moved at God’s command because it was God the creator who spoke. It should not surprise us that we read, “And that is what happened.”
So, as we read through the Word together this year, keep this truth in mind: when God speaks, whatever He commands happens. We can thus trust that He will keep His promises to us. His Word is true because He is truth.
PERSONAL REFLECTION: How much do you really want to read the Word this year? Do you approach it with excitement because this is God’s Word to us?
PRAYER: “God, give me great love for You and Your Word today – and throughout 2022.”
TOMORROW’S READING: Genesis 4:1-5:32, 1 Chronicles 1:1-4, Genesis 6:1-22
