01/18/22 The Faith of Joseph

READING: Genesis 47:28–50:26

Joseph had no question that the people of God would be returning to the Promised Land. He understood that God had orchestrated events to get him to Egypt to save many lives, but he also understood that God had “solemnly promised to give [the land] to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob” (Gen 50:24). He just knew God would keep His Word—so much so that he requested late in life that the people take his bones with them to Israel when they returned.

Joseph died at 110 years old. The Egyptians embalmed him and placed him in a coffin in Egypt (Gen 50:10)—but his bones would not stay there. Joseph’s God would come through for His people, and Moses would carry the bones of Joseph back to the Land in that day (Exo 13:19). It would take almost 400 years, but God would keep His Word. Centuries later, the writer of Hebrews also noted Joseph’s faith and included him in the hall of faith (Heb 11:22).

May God grant us this kind of faith!
