01/19/22 Trusting Anyway

READING: Job 1:1-4:21

This part of the story of Job always amazes me. Job was a man the Bible describes as “blameless—a man of complete integrity” (Job 1:1). We further learn that “he feared God and stayed away from evil” (Job 1:1). Nevertheless, God allowed Satan to attack Job’s life (in fact, it was God who sovereignly brought up Job’s name to Satan). Satan, who surely would have killed Job had God allowed him to do so, attacked Job and his family with great ferocity. Satan is, after, the “destroyer” (Rev 9:11).

Job lost everything except his wife—including his children—in Job 1. Then, he suffered himself with boils in Job 2. The agony must have been great. Were I in Job’s shoes, I probably would have had questions about why a righteous man was seriously suffering. What most amazes me, though, is Job’s responses to both attacks:

  • “Then he shaved his head and fell to the ground to worship.” (Job 1:20)
  • “Should we accept only good things from the hand of God and never anything bad?” (Job 2:10)

And, the text tells us twice that Job did not blame God or sin with his lips (Job 1:22, 2:10). We know Job later had questions about the whole situation, but we cannot leapfrog these responses. He honored the Lord even in great suffering: “Praise the name of the Lord!” (Job 1:21). May we choose to do the same.

PERSONAL REFLECTION: Are you facing a tough time that makes it hard to trust God today?

TODAY’S PRAYER: “Lord, help me to trust You even if I lose everything.”

TOMORROW’S READING: Job 5:1-7:21
