READING: Job 26:1-29:25
Job piles up the phrases in today’s reading to remind us of God’s power (Job 26:7-14). For example, God “hangs the earth on nothing.” He “wraps the rain in his thick clouds.” He “set the boundary between day and night.” The foundations of heaven quake at his rebuke. The sea grows calm by His power. By His Spirit, He made the heavens beautiful.
You almost get the sense that Job could have continued his list for days as he considered the awesome power of God. In fact, Job says that “These are just the beginning of all that he does, merely a whisper of his power” (Job 26:14). Read that last line again: “merely a whisper of his power.” All that Job described was no more than a glimpse, a hint of the power of God. All that we see constitutes but the outskirts of God’s power and ways. If that’s the case, it’s no wonder Job asked, “Who, then, can comprehend the thunder of his power?”
Indeed, who can understand His power and His ways? Not you, and not I. None of can come close to grasping God and His power. All we can do is honor Him.
PERSONAL REFLECTION: When was the last time you meditated on the power of God, the one who “stretches the Northern sky over empty space” (Job 26:7)?
TODAY’S PRAYER: “You, God, are powerfully amazing.”
