02/08/22 Do Not Follow the Crowd

READING: Exodus 22:16-24:18

It’s a general mandate for all people; thus, it’s wise for us to hear it and heed it: “Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong” (Exo 23:2). In context, the reference is to someone who sides with the majority in a case even when the majority is simply wrong—but the principle is helpful in general.

The writer recognizes that following the crowd is often easier than standing alone. There is a distorted sense of “comfort” when the numbers are on your side; at least in that case, you find some sense of support from others around you. Standing alone, though, is seldom easy, even when you believe you are in the right. Sometimes it’s easier to stand with those who agree with us, despite the fact that the majority may be on the “road that leads to destruction” (Matt 7:13).

To stand up for right might be lonely, but it is always right. May God give us (1) believers around us who think as Christians ought to think—thus, they can help us do right, and (2) the backbone to stand alone when necessary.

PERSONAL REFLECTION: How susceptible are you to the majority?

TODAY’S PRAYER: “God, give me believing family and friends who walk with You, even when the majority does not.”

TOMORROW’S READING: Exodus 25:1-28:43
