04/17/22 God Our Helper

READING: 1 Samuel 23:13-25:44, Psalm 54

Saul was again in pursuit of David. David’s godless enemies conspired against him, but he knew where to turn: to God. David sought God’s listening ear, imploring Him to defend and rescue him. The enemies “care[d] nothing for God” (Psa 54:3), but David trusted that God would be his aid: “But God is my helper. The Lord keeps me alive!” (Psa 54:4). Indeed, David in faith promised to offer a sacrifice to God in gratitude for His help.

Our situation is different from David’s, but our neediness for God’s assistance is no less real. On this Resurrection Sunday of 2022, we celebrate together only because the God who is our help has already paid the price for our sin and promised us ultimate victory in heaven. We have food on our table, clothing on our back, a roof over our heads, and breath in our lungs because God is our helper. He alone sustains our lives moment by moment. He is on our side–both now and throughout eternity.

Pam and I wish you a great Resurrection Sunday!

PERSONAL REFLECTION: Do you recognize how needy you are today?

TODAY’S PRAYER: “Father, I will praise your name, O Lord, for it is good” (Psa 54:6).
