READING: 2 Samuel 2:1–3:5, 1 Chronicles 3:1-4a, 2 Samuel 23:8-17, 1 Chronicles 11:10-19, 2 Samuel 23:18-39, 1 Chronicles 11:20-47
I’m always awed when I consider the fact that God communicates with us. Over against the world’s false gods who have mouths that can’t speak and ears that can’t hear, the God of the Bible initiates a genuine, ongoing relationship with us. I’m filled with wonder that He speaks to us through His Word, His Spirit, and His people, and He then hears us when we cry out to Him in prayer. It’s all quite mysterious and magnificent at the same time.
Thus, the first reading in today’s devotion captures my attention: “After this, David asked the Lord, ‘Should I move back to one of the towns of Judah?’ ‘Yes,’ the Lord replied. Then David asked, ‘Which town should I go to?’ ‘To Hebron,’ the Lord answered” (2 Sam 2:1). David had grieved the deaths of Saul and Jonathan, and now he needed direction from God. How God communicated this information to David isn’t clear, but that He did is clear. How wise it was of David to seek the direction of a God who was willing to give it!
And, how unwise it is for us to make our own plans without seeking the input of a God who wants to guide us!
PERSONAL REFLECTION: How often do you seek the Lord’s direction in your daily life?
TODAY’S PRAYER: “God, forgive me when I fail to come to You for direction.”
TOMORROW’S READING: 2 Samuel 3:6-4:12
