05/26/22 In Vain

READING: 1 Kings 4:1-34, Psalm 72, Psalm 127

The Lord is sovereign over all things. And, we owe our lives to him. All we have is from Him, and nothing we do apart from Him will make significant difference. What we do on our own, in fact, is “in vain” (Psa 127:1, 2)—and the psalmist knew it.

If we build a house without Him, it is in vain. If we seek security by guarding our cities apart from God, it is in vain. If we get up early and stay up late to work, but do so without the Lord, it is in vain. Even if we produce and grow a family, to do so without God is in vain. To have a quiver of kids is great—and by that we build our house (Psa 127:1)—but we must keep in mind that each of those kids is a gift from the sovereign Lord. When we recognize, though, that God is sovereign and supreme, we find our rest in Him.

May you and I labor not in vain today in our own strength, but in His strength in accordance with His will and in His power.  May He be the one who builds our home.

PERSONAL REFLECTION:  Are you laboring on your own today?

DAILY PRAYER: “Help me, God, to serve You fully today.”

TOMORROW’S READING: Proverbs 1:1-4:27
