READING: Proverbs 14:1-16:33
“There is a way that seems right to a person, but its end is the way to death.” (Prov 14:12)
I heard this verse quoted many times when I was a young believer, but I did not necessarily give it much consideration. I wasn’t wise enough to consider its ramifications, and I was young enough that any sense of “death” was not on my radar. All I remember is that my pastor always used the verse when he wanted us to know about the consequences of poor choices. Many years later, I realize my pastor was not off base.
I have since learned that we are really good at deceiving ourselves. We convince ourselves that what we wrongly choose to do will not be costly, especially if we have done it before without negative repercussions. The image of this text is likely that of a traveler who chooses a shortcut, a way around that seems without danger, only to discover too late that the choice leads to disaster. What appears acceptable is actually deceptive—and the long-term consequences remove the validity of any rationalizations we may choose for our actions.
What, then, must we do? Ask God to help us look beyond the temporary to see where our choices will take us. The way that is right is the way of clinging to God for His wisdom and direction.
PERSONAL REFLECTION: Might any of your choices today lead to trouble later?
DAILY PRAYER: “God, grant me eyes to see beyond my immediate choices.”
