READING: Psalm 119
In the longest chapter of the Bible, Psalm 119, are several important themes. For example, the psalmist recognizes he needs God to teach him to understand and obey His statutes: “Lord, may you be blessed; teach me your statutes” (v. 12); “Open my eyes so that I may contemplate wondrous things from your instruction” (v. 18); “Help me understand the meaning of your precepts so that I can meditate on your wonders” (v. 27); “Help me understand your instruction, and I will obey it and follow it with all my heart” (v. 34); “Your hands made me and formed me; give me understanding so that I can learn your commands” (v. 73).
Moreover, the psalmist knows and affirms his commitment to God: “I will keep your statutes” (v. 8); “I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word” (v. 16); “This is my practice: I obey your precepts” (v. 56); “I hurried, not hesitating to keep your commands” (v. 60); “I will keep your decrees” (v. 146). I could list other verses that further describe both of these commitments – from seeking God’s help to understand the Word to following that Word fully – but I trust you understand the point.
What most captures me today, though, is a verse I had not considered deeply before: “My eyes pour out streams of tears because people do not follow your instruction” (v. 136). The emotion of this text is profound. The heartache is tangible. The burden is heavy. The tears are real. While the psalmist also at times grows angry with rebellion, here he deeply hurts for those who miss the blessing of knowing God because they ignore His teaching. May the Lord increase our grief accordingly today on behalf of those who do not know Christ!
