READING: Jeremiah 51:15-58, 2 Kings 24:10-17, 2 Chronicles 36:10, 1 Chronicles 3:10-16, 2 Chronicles 36:11-14, Jeremiah 52:1-3, 2 Kings 24:18-20, Jeremiah 37:1-10
On this Lord’s day when many of us will be proclaiming God’s Word through teaching small groups or preaching sermons, one little phrase in today’s multiple readings is especially encouraging to me. King Nebuchadnezzar and his forces took the city of Jerusalem, and he “carried off from there all the treasures of the Lord’s temple and all the treasures of king’s palace” (2 Kgs 24:13). This move by the enemy king was – and here’s the phrase that captures my attention today – “just as the Lord had predicted” (2 Kgs 24:13).
Listen, in fact, to what God had said:
- “Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, ‘Hear the word of the Lord: ‘The time will certainly come when everything in your palace and all that your fathers have stored up until this day will be carried off to Babylon; nothing will be left,’ says the Lord.’” (2 Kgs 20:16-17, also Isa 39:6)
- “I will give up your wealth and your treasures as plunder, without cost, for all your sins in all your borders.” (Jer 15:13)
What the Lord said would happen did indeed happen. Today, you and I can trust that God is still faithful to the Word—His Word—we teach and preach. That truth ought to give us godly confidence as we stand before His people.
PERSONAL REFLECTION: As you join with your congregation today, do you do so with wonder over God’s faithfulness?
DAILY PRAYER: “I praise You, Father, for Your faithfulness to Your Word.”
TOMORROW’S READING: Jeremiah 37:11-38:28, Ezekiel 1:1-3:15
