READING: Ezra 9:1-10:44, Nehemiah 1:1-2:20
Ezra knew the depth and height of the sin of God’s people. He was, in fact, “ashamed and embarrassed” to lift his head toward God because of their iniquities and guilt (Ezra 9:6). Amid that grief, though, Ezra saw glimmers of hope.
First, he realized that God had, “for a brief moment,” extended grace toward them and preserved a remnant of His people (Ezra 9:8). Second, he saw God had given them “a little relief and light” even while they were in slavery; He did not abandon them (Ezra 9:8-9). Third, Ezra could speak of God’s grace moving the hearts of Persian kings to allow God’s people to rebuild the temple. In no way were the people worthy—but God extended His hand toward rebellious people. He punished them less than they deserved and allowed them to survive (Ezra 9:13).
You and I could make our own list today describing God’s gracious acts toward us. Indeed, let that list be the focus of your prayers today.
PERSONAL REFLECTION: What would your “grace list” sound like today?
DAILY PRAYER: “Lord, You are righteous and gracious. We praise You today.”
