READING: Matthew 2:1-23, Luke 2:41-52, Mark 1:1-8, Matthew 3:1-12, Luke 3:1-18, Mark 1:9-11, Matthew 3:13-17, Luke 3:21-22
Today’s readings, ones we likely know better because of our familiarity with the Christmas story and the ministry of John the Baptist, are filled with evidence that the God of the Bible communicates with His people. The methods and situations vary, but they are nevertheless clear:
- The wise men saw a star that guided them.
- They learned in a dream not to go back to Herod.
- Joseph heard through a dream to flee with his family to Egypt.
- Through other dreams, he knew to return to Israel but also withdraw to Galilee.
- Angels spoke to the shepherds in the field.
- The coming of John the Baptist was the fulfillment of a prophecy God had given through Isaiah centuries before.
- At Jesus’ baptism, the Father spoke from heaven.
We realize today that these were often unique methods for unique times, but we still must marvel that God communicates with us through His Word, His Spirit, and His people. He knows us, and He wants us to know Him. I pray that these daily devotions help you to know Him better.
PERSONAL REFLECTION: What is God saying to you today through His Word?
DAILY PRAYER: “Father, I praise You for communicating with us. Help me to hear You clearly today.”
