11/20/22 Not Gods at All

READING: 1 Corinthians 8:1-11:1

On this Lord’s Day when Pam and I will be gathering with our local church and worshiping the true God, I rejoice on one hand—but grieve on the other. I rejoice because God many years ago called us to Him, made us His children, and loves and leads us today. I cannot imagine our lives without Christ at their center.

I also grieve, though, because of the millions (even billions) of people around the world who are worshiping false gods today. They turn to their man-made idols, believing that the “gods” they associate with those idols are somehow real, living, and powerful. In Paul’s understanding, the “gods” they worship are no gods at all, for there is only one God and one Lord; even the demons who promote the idolatry of false religion are fully subservient to the only One who is indeed God.

You and I exist because the true God has created us and sustained our lives. Would you join me in praying for peoples around the world who don’t know this God and are instead worshiping false “gods” today? As you gather with your local congregation, be sure to thank God for who He is, for what He has done, and for what He has promised to come. He is alive!

PERSONAL REFLECTION: What idols in your life do you treat as “gods”?

DAILY PRAYER: “Living God, show me any idolatry in my life today.”

TOMORROW’S READING: 1 Corinthians 11:2-13:13
