READING: Acts 21:37-23:35
Today would have been my dad’s 84th birthday had he still been living. I miss him, but I miss him primarily because we had only three years together after he became a believer at age 71. To this day, I wish I had had a dad who raised me in the Lord—but, I’m deeply, deeply grateful for the way the Lord grabbed my dad’s attention and drew him to Himself. I’m still not entirely sure how that happened, but I know Dad simply felt so impressed to follow God one day that he sought out my Christian brother, learned more, and committed himself to Christ that day.
I think about that day as I read today Paul’s testimony about God’s making Himself known to the persecutor-turned-apostle. Through both supernatural revelation and God-directed human intervention, God grabbed Paul’s heart. A supernatural light and voice forced him to his face on the way to Damascus. God had already prepared Ananias to give him direction, and He later provided Paul further direction via a trance. Still later, God protected Paul through Paul’s nephew learning of a plot against the apostle. So powerful was God’s presence in Paul’s life that He could only follow Him.
That’s a sweet, sweet God who reveals Himself today to us, too, through our reading His Word together.
