12/11/22 Prayer and Peace

READING: Philippians 2:12-4:23

If you read many of my devotions or blog posts, you know I value prayer. In fact, I recently published a new book entitled, The Potential and Power of Prayer. All of that notwithstanding, I’m realizing today that I must give a new level of attention to my praying.

Here’s why. I’m a worrier. And, I sometimes worry enough that it affects my spiritual, physical, and emotional life. If I’m honest, I can let a worry so consume me that it becomes an idol. That assessment surely raises questions for me when I read these words today: “Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus” (Phil 4:6-7).

Why, then, is it time for me to pray more—and to pray more effectively? It is prayer and petition with thanksgiving that will ease my worries and restore my peace even in the most troublesome moments. I need those things to happen as I turn my heart to Him in prayer.

PERSONAL REFLECTION: Do you allow worry to consume you?

DAILY PRAYER: “Father, I’m tired of consuming worry. Turn my heart fully to You via prayer.”

TOMORROW’S READING: James 1:1-3:18
