READING: Revelation 15:1-18:24
Scholars debate who “Babylon” is in the book of Revelation, but it’s unquestionably the case that she is presented as evil opposition to the people of God. At a minimum, Babylon is an anti-Christ culture who is “the mother of prostitutes and of the detestable things of the earth” (Rev 17:5) whose sins are “piled up to heaven” (Rev 18:5). Even more strikingly, though, she sees herself continually reigning and facing no sorrow (Rev 18:7). No wonder, then, that God calls His people to come out from her and avoid her sins (Rev 18:4).
What challenges my heart today is the fact that the people of God would need to hear repeatedly these words about fleeing evil, coming out from the world, and separating themselves from uncleanness (e.g., 2 Cor 6:17, 1 John 2:15, Rev 18:4). Apparently, the lure of the power and pleasures of the world is so strong and attractive that we need to hear these mandates again and again.
Again, today, the inspired Word of God has warned us. May we heed His words.
