01/02/22 Then God Said

READING: Genesis 1-5

Our God communicates with us. That God somehow communicates is evidenced as early as the third verse of the Bible, where we read for the first time, “Then God said” (Gen 1:3). God speaks—and something happens when He does. If He says, “let there be light,” there will indeed be light.

Morever, He speaks to those He creates in His own image. Today’s texts show us that He “said,” “commanded,” “called out,” “asked,” and “replied” to Adam and Eve. The God who created us is a relational God who desires us to be in fellowship with Him. He wants us to listen to Him, worship Him, and call on His name as Genesis 4:26 indicates the people did.

Relationship, of course, is both listening to and talking with others. In this case, we listen to God through His Word—and we talk to Him through prayer. One without the other is insufficient, so let’s work together on both throughout this new year!

PERSONAL REFLECTION: How much do you want to grow in Bible study and prayer in this new year?

DAILY PRAYER: “God, thank You for speaking to us and listening to us. You are beyond comprehension.”

 TOMORROW’S READING:  Genesis 6-10
