READING: Genesis 46-49
It was just a cave in the field of Ephron the Hethite, but it spoke volumes. Abraham had purchased the property to bury his wife Sarah, and today’s text tells us that Abraham and his wife, Isaac and his wife Rebekah, and Jacob’s wife Leah were all buried there. Jacob, too, would join them when he breathed his last.
Generation after generation after generation of life. Struggles. Sojourning. Deceit. Impatience. Rivalry. Slavery. Reunions and reconciliations. Children and grandchildren. And death. A lot of it, in fact. God was calling out a people through whom would come a Redeemer, but the consequences of sin would mark every generation. Death was inevitable—and burial places were a daily reminder of that truth.
They still are, actually. Every time I pass a graveyard, I’m reminded that sin is costly. Thank God that the grave is not the end, however!
