READING: Leviticus 10-13
The God of the Bible is holy. Distinct. Pure. Without darkness. Just. Righteous. Perfect. Set apart. Above all.
In His perfect holiness, He has the right to set the rules and the standards. In His holiness, He has the right to require His people to be holy—and to carry out judgment when we choose not to obey Him. Nadab and Abihu tragically learned that lesson when they “offered strange fire before the Lord, which He had not commanded them” (Lev 10:1, emphasis added).
Don’t miss that last phrase that so dramatically differs from other affirmations of obedience in the preceding chapters. Nadab and Abihu went against the commands of God, and it cost them their lives in judgment. As the people of God began their sacrificial system, Nadab and Abihu decided to try their own plan — and God would not allow it. He expected them from the beginning to do His work His way. Period.
He is holy—and so must we be in His grace.
