READING: Leviticus 23-25
Reminders that the Lord had brought His people out of Egypt occur in a few places in today’s reading (Lev 23:43; 25:38, 42, 55). God had been gracious to His people. He had orchestrated events and judgments so the Egyptians would let His people go. He had led them out of bondage to freedom, showing them mercy over and again. Never were God’s people to forget the exodus event.
Knowing they were the recipients of God’s grace, they were to be gracious toward others in turn. Surely you and I need to hear these words, too, at times. We sometimes receive grace but offer none to others. We seek and accept forgiveness for ourselves while granting no such forgiveness in turn. We speak of God’s undeserved work in our lives even while we sometimes treat others arrogantly.
To put it simply, we’re a forgetful, prideful people. We daily need to remember that we were in bondage until God lovingly and powerfully freed us. He has chosen to make us His people.
PERSONAL REFLECTION: Do you need reminders of God’s grace today?
DAILY PRAYER: “God, forgive us when we forget the magnificence of Your grace.”
