READING: Numbers 2-3
This devotion today is quite to the point. I sense no need to linger within this discussion; instead, I recognize the need for us to evaluate ourselves as we seek to follow God. Here are the two texts from today’s reading that form our evaluative grid:
- “The Israelites did everything the Lord commanded Moses” (Num 2:34)
- “But Nadab and Abihu died in the Lord’s presence when they presented unauthorized fire before the Lord in the Wilderness of Sinai” (Num 3:4)
Those are really our options today: obey God or disobey Him. In the words of author Jerry Bridges, “It is time for us Christians to face up to our responsibility for holiness. Too often we say we are ‘defeated’ by this or that sin. No, we are not defeated; we are simply disobedient! . . . . We need to brace ourselves up and to realize that we are responsible for our thoughts, attitudes, and actions.”*
PERSONAL REFLECTION: Ask the same question today we asked yesterday: do you most obey or disobey God these days?
DAILY PRAYER: “God, don’t let me miss my responsibility to walk in holiness.”
