03/03/23 He Listens

READING: Deuteronomy 9-12

Today, I’m thinking about people who listen to me—meaning they at least seem to pay attention when I speak. They may not always agree with me, but they listen.

My wife listens. My family members listen. My students listen. My missionary team listens. My direct reports at the seminary listen. I hope people listen when I preach. Honestly, I’m sometimes amazed that anyone listens to me at all, but they do.

Then, today, I’m even more amazed when I read these words from Moses as he spoke to God’s people:

  • “I was afraid of the fierce anger the Lord had directed against you, because he was about to destroy you. But again the Lord listened to me on that occasion.” (Deut 9:19)
  • “I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights like the first time. The Lord also listened to me on this occasion; he agreed not to annihilate you.” (Deut 10:10)

It truly is incredible to me that the God of eternity who created and rules over everything listens to us. In fact, His willingness to listen to me makes me want to listen to Him, too, even more intensely.

PERSONAL REFLECTION: Are you filled with wonder that God listens to you?

DAILY PRAYER: “God, I’m so grateful I can speak to You and You listen.”
