READING: Deuteronomy 25-28
In a moment of covenant renewal and affirmation, Moses gave the following summary of the covenant. As you read these words, watch for (1) what God expected from His people, and what they affirmed, and (2) what God affirmed for them:
The Lord your God is commanding you this day to follow these statutes and ordinances. Follow them carefully with all your heart and all your soul. Today you have affirmed that the Lord is your God and that you will walk in his ways, keep his statutes, commands, and ordinances, and obey him. And today the Lord has affirmed that you are his own possession as he promised you, that you are to keep all his commands, that he will elevate you to praise, fame, and glory above all the nations he has made, and that you will be a holy people to the Lord your God as he promised. (Deut 26:16-19)
The people had a role to play, and God had a promise He would keep. The people were to follow Him with all their being. They were to be careful to keep all His commands. The God who demanded full obedience was their God; He who made them would also honor them among the nations.
This call to a holy lifestyle that glorifies God remains for us, too. We must be God’s distinct people—and God will help us get there as He keeps His Word to us. We are His people (1 Pet 2:9).
PERSONAL REFLECTION: Are you following God with all your being?
