03/28/23 Victory + Doubt

READING: Judges 15-18

We can be fickle people when it comes to faith—and even people like Samson were the same. He had just defeated 1000 men of the Philistines when the Spirit of God miraculously came upon him, broke the ropes that bound him, and empowered him for victory. Surely that was a glorious day filled with evidence of God’s power.

But, the battle apparently depleted Samuel. Thirst engulfed him, and he must have thought death was imminent if he did not get water. In fact, he both honored God for victory and questioned Him for His lack of concern in the same statement: “You have accomplished this great victory through your servant. Must I now die of thirst and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised?” (Judg 15:18). Like Elijah, who found himself dejected and weary soon after his victory over the prophets of Baal at Mt. Carmel, Samson allowed the immediacy of the need to trump what God had just done.

We do the same thing sometimes. Today we experience God’s victory, but tomorrow we wonder why God doesn’t care. The good news is that He does care—even when we struggle trusting.

PERSONAL REFLECTION: Are you trusting God today, or are you wrestling with Him?

DAILY PRAYER: “God, help me to remember the victories You have given no matter what I face today.”

TOMORROW’S READING: Judges 19-20
