READING: 1 Chronicles 2-5
Today’s reading is not the easiest reading. I don’t know about you, but I prefer the action stories, Jesus’ teaching, and Paul’s adventures over long lists. I like reading principles and truths that guide me in life. I’m not always overly excited about reading a list of names.
On the other hand, the names matter. The lists in these chapters focus on the tribe of Judah and the line of David, but here’s what is most encouraging to me today: God knew every person in the list by name. No one’s inclusion in the list caught Him by surprise. He never wondered, “Who is that person?” or “Why is he included here?” All the way to 1 Chronicles 9:1, in fact, God’s inspired Word includes the names of people in His plan.
Our names are not included in that list, of course, but God knows our names, too. Indeed, He has chosen to write them in heaven (Luke 10:20). He knows my full name, my preferred name, and even my childhood nickname I seldom share with others! He knows me through and through—and loves me anyway. May His name—not mine—be glorified today.
PERSONAL REFLECTION: How concerned are you that the world know your name?
DAILY PRAYER: “I thank You and praise You, Lord, that You know me by name.”
