READING: Job 9-15
The fact that God has made us is marvelous indeed. He fashioned us in His image, and He put us together in such a way that all we can do is wonder at His creation. Job, too, knew there was something special about God’s making Him—evidenced by his speaking of that creation even as he wondered why God was allowing such tragedy and affliction in his life.
The images Job used to describe his creation are several. God’s hand had shaped and formed him like a potter who creates a work of art. Using a somewhat unusual image, Job said God’s creative process was like his turning milk into curdled cheese—perhaps a description of life from semen in the womb to the formation of the body. It was also God who had knit Job together with skin, flesh, bones, and tendons. God had likewise given him life, steadfast love, and ongoing care, so it is no wonder that Job wrestled with God’s purposes in the affliction he faced.
Still, today I pause and marvel, too, at the way God has put us together. From conception forward, we are His handiwork.
