READING: Psalms 3-17
Sometimes I don’t sleep well, especially when I have a lot on my mind. Even this week I’ve had some rough nights of sleeplessness—but today’s reading is a reminder for me to listen to the Word and trust the Lord.
- “I lie down and sleep; I wake again because the Lord sustains me.” (Psa 3:5)
- “I will both lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, Lord, make me live in safety.” (Psa 4:8)
The psalmist was facing his own difficult times, particularly because of foes who stood against him. He cried out to the Lord in his anguish, and he found the Lord’s rest sweet. Indeed, the fact that he could lie down and sleep at all amid this trouble was a sign of his trust.
He knew the Lord was sustaining him no matter what he faced. Further, he knew he could sleep in peace because God would protect and provide for him. In God alone would the psalmist find his security, no matter what his external circumstances were. I need to remember that faith the next time I have a sleepless night.
PERSONAL REFLECTION: What do you do when you have restless nights?
DAILY PRAYER: “God, grant me inner peace that allows me to rest.”
